Stories A promise's telling

The Factory

Whatever is bought or asked for moves by its kind to its proof, and every step is judged by the cheapest judge that can say no — never by the one who built it.

The seven beats

World
Group one, and a factory that runs end to end but builds only for itself, every row down the same sequence.
Cast
The buyer or asker; the chairman, the CEO and the heads; the cheap models of several families; a strong model where no test can judge; a person where only a person can sign; the judges, none of them the maker.
Knock
A purchase or a request. The first real one was a request, from the operator, for the factory's own next chapter.
Want
The idea becomes real, every step judged by the cheapest judge that can say no, a buyer's promise settled by a judge ONE cannot impersonate.
Way
Story, promise, a test per row; four questions pick the flow; the router picks by price; could-not-look climbs the ladder; marks teach the next order.
Turn
The building went cheap all at once, and the factory turned out to be a line of judges.
Lesson
Open — until the first bought order has gone round the loop.

The Turn The building went cheap all at once. What was left to pay for was a judge.

I · The factory that built for itself

World

Group one had built a factory that worked. A story was told once. A chairman convened the heads on /in, the CEO routed the rows, and each head left with a promise. The board chained the rows so they could not be claimed out of order, and a builder took each one in its own worktree and proved it.

It had one flaw nobody had named, because nobody had asked. It only ever built for itself, and it walked every row the same way. A copy edit and an escrow fix paid the same ceremony, and the same strong model built both.

II · Thirty rows no builder could take

Cast

The top hundred rows were read one at a time. Thirty could never have been handed to a builder at all: eleven were epics, six were rulings, nine were things only a person could do, two were duplicates and two were already done. They sat in the queue beside the rest.

So the cast was never one kind of worker. There were builders, and there were the people who rule, sign and act. And there were the judges, who until then had mostly been the builder's own test.

III · Buy it, or ask for it

Knock

The factory opens with a knock from outside: someone buys a product, or asks for one. A skill, a tool call, a page of writing, audio, video, data, a plugin, a piece of software. The purchase or the request is the signal that starts a run.

The first knock through the new door was not a purchase. It was the operator, on the twenty-sixth of September, asking the factory to build its own next chapter.

IV · An idea, made real

Want

What the person at the door wants is simple to say. They want the idea told properly, promised by someone, built, and shown to be done. They do not want to read the diffs. They want to know it was kept, and they want to know it from someone other than the builder.

V · Imagine with the frontier, build with the cheap

Way

Every kind of work already had a name. work-categories.md holds them all: families, rungs, eight flows, the top hundred placed one by one. That catalogue is the construction plan. What was missing was who does which part.

The answer came from the bake. The strong models imagine: they tell the story, write the card, say what done means, find the cause, draw the threat. DeepSeek Flash builds, because it is cheap and fast and good enough, and a second family checks it. Then each step asks the cheapest judge that can say no.

The ladder, in one line exit code → a typed decision → one fast model → a panel of families → a person. Climb only when the rung below could not look.

VI · Forty-one of forty-two

Turn

Seven models built the same six cards. Forty-one of forty-two passed first time. The cheapest cost three hundredths of a cent. And when the cheap models wrote the tests instead, the tests they wrote together refused four answers the strong model's own test had passed, and all four were wrong.

The building went cheap all at once. So what was left to pay for? Not the building. The judging: saying what done means, deciding what to do, and saying to someone who was not in the room that it was done. A judgement is only worth paying for if the one who built the thing cannot give it. A builder that grades its own work is writing a diary.

That changed what the factory was. It was no longer a line of builders with a check at the end. It was a line of judges with building in between. Most of them are a test that answers in milliseconds, some a single typed question, a few a panel of models from different families that must agree, and at the top a person. When a judge cannot look, nothing moves. And the promise made to someone who paid is settled by a judge the factory cannot be.

Paths

The flows this story walks — trigger → step → step.

  1. factory-order (bought): trigger → sell → checkout:resume → agent (storyteller) → tool (thread:append) → agent (head drafts) → tool (promise:make) → tool (tasks:bulk)
  2. factory-order (asked): trigger (world:route, factory) → agent (storyteller) → tool (thread:append) → human (accept the draft) → tool (promise:make) → tool (tasks:bulk)
  3. every step: tool → condition (judge 0 · 1 · 3) → 3 climbs one rung
  4. card: agent (maker) → tool (testgen) → tool (bake) → tool (cross-check) → tool (gates) → tool (mark/warn)
  5. secure: agent (threat model, exploit red) → agent (build) → tool (exploit green, FULL lane) → agent (second lens) → human (approve) → tool (probe production)
  6. decide: agent (options with evidence) → human (rules) → tool (record, unblock)

Every event is a signal; each names the path it marks or warns.

  • checkout:resume · from the payment webhook, for a factory product's sell step resumes the factory-order run tags: factory, sell
  • world:route · from anyone asking for a product lane 3's standing workflow — factory-order, asked tags: factory
  • world:bake-outcome · from bake.sh and the card flow after every judged row mark or warn (family → model) tags: factory, bake
  • human:notify · from the top rung, the decide, operate and secure flows a person's inbox; human:resolve resumes tags: factory, decision

Transactions
