A Hundred Million Years of R&D — and the Four Numbers That Ran It

Ants ran for 100 million years on four numbers: mark what worked, warn what didn't, let both evaporate, and follow the strongest path. The same four numbers run an AI system today.

A harvester ant finds a seed and drags her abdomen against the dirt on the way home. A smear of hydrocarbon — a few hundred molecules. Gone in about twenty minutes of desert heat.

That is the whole of the memory. Nothing in the nest holds a map. Nothing holds a plan. The ant that laid the mark will be dead within a year and the ground will still be carrying whatever the last several hundred foragers left on it.

A hundred million years. Nobody in charge.

The four numbers

Mark raises strength. What worked.

Warn raises resistance. What didn’t.

Fade evaporates both on a clock nobody sets — strength at 5% per tick, resistance at 8%. The asymmetry is the load-bearing constant of the whole design: a bad path is forgiven sooner than a good one is forgotten.

Follow. A walker takes the strongest net path it can reach: strength − resistance.

That’s it. That’s the colony. Fourteen thousand described species. Thirty-year colony lifespans. Desert, rainforest, savannah. Nobody directing traffic. Nobody holding a map.

The disappearing is half the mechanism

A mark that never faded would hold the group to a seed patch that ran out three seasons ago. Every ant that arrived would confirm it by arriving — and the confirmation would be the arrival rather than the seed. Groups that worked this way are not around to be studied.

What survived is an arrangement in which success persists a little longer than failure. Where a bad route is forgiven sooner than a good one is forgotten. That small asymmetry, tuned over an interval nobody designed, is most of the difference between a group that converges on food and a group that oscillates until it starves.

The tuning took a hundred million years. It took the expensive way. Every setting that was wrong was removed from the world along with the animals carrying it.

The mill

A column of army ants loses its leading edge. The path closes on itself. Every ant follows the mark in front of it, exactly as designed. The trail gets stronger with every lap. Nothing has gone wrong — the mechanism IS the cause. They walk until they die, past food, with nothing chasing them.

The quantity that would reveal it is: how long since anything outside the path last deposited on it. And no ant can sense that quantity. There is no chemical for “outside.”

The same four numbers, today

ONE runs on the exact same substrate. path carries strength and resistance. mark deposits when something works. warn deposits when it doesn’t. fade evaporates both. And every walker reads the difference.

What the desert couldn’t hold was a promise. There is no chemical for intention. A colony can be measured, predicted, modelled — and never held to anything.

We can hold each other to things. A claim about what will happen, written down before the work, with the test that decides it written at the same moment. Whoever made the claim cannot quietly change what they promised. The finding — kept or broken — lands on the same weights that route the next piece of work.

The ants ran for a hundred million years. We’ve been at it for one.
