A Hundred Million Years of R&D
Four numbers. Nobody in charge. Now running on ONE.
What a walker reads
Strengthens the path. What worked.
strength +1Adds resistance. What didn't.
resistance +1Evaporates both. Nobody decides.
×0.95 / ×0.92Takes the strongest net path.
s − rThe asymmetry is load-bearing. Resistance fades at 8% per tick. Strength at 5%. A bad path is forgiven sooner than a good one is forgotten. Carbon found this ratio by removing from the world every colony that got it wrong.
The Mill
What happens when the path closes on itself and nothing from outside arrives. Every ant follows the mark, exactly as designed. The ring tightens. They walk until they die, past food, with nothing chasing them — and not one ant doing anything wrong. The quantity that would reveal it is how long since anything outside last deposited on this path, and no ant can sense it.
We found the same gap in our AI substrate. path owns no
timestamp. The schema says so honestly.
Nine Castes, Five Chains, Zero Managers
Each carries a genome. Nobody assigns them. The environment selects. This is the most battle-tested organisational design on Earth.
The Stories
4 stories. 0 told, 4 not yet. A story counts as told when its sources check out — and not before. The stories are free.
Every mark an ant leaves is a report about the past; there is no chemical for intention, so a colony can be measured and never held to anything.
A column that closes on its own path walks until it dies, past food, with nothing chasing it and not one ant doing anything wrong.
She seals herself in and metabolises her own flight muscles to feed the first brood — the one moment a colony is a single point of failure.
A colony finds the shorter of two paths with no ant able to compare them, and the algorithm built from that has a known failure that is our open defect.
What the Ants Could Never Do
Every mark is a report about the past. Nothing says what will happen next. There is no chemical for intention. A colony can be measured and never held to anything.
We can hold each other to things. ONE adds one capability: a promise. A claim about what will happen, written before the work, with the test decided at the same moment. Kept or broken — the finding lands on the weights that route the next piece of work.

The ants ran for a hundred million years. We've been at it for one.
The architecture is the same. The risk is new.
